ChatGPT has upgraded its web search capabilities, now offering faster, more accurate responses with direct links to relevant sources. Previously, getting such timely answers would have required visiting a search engine, but now users can access real-time data on sports, news, stocks, and more within the ChatGPT experience, combining conversational ease with up-to-date information.

The model will automatically search the web when appropriate based on the question, or users can initiate a search manually by selecting the web search icon. This feature is available at chatgpt.com and in ChatGPT’s desktop and mobile apps. Currently, it’s accessible to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and SearchGPT waitlist members, with plans to extend access to Enterprise and Edu users in the coming weeks. 

Over the next few months, it will become available to all Free users.

With the latest update, users can ask ChatGPT naturally and conversationally, and the model will search the web for relevant, high-quality information. Follow-up questions can further refine the response, as ChatGPT considers the context of the conversation to enhance accuracy. 

Collaborations with news and data sources bring up-to-the-minute updates on weather, stocks, sports, and more, complete with new visual displays.

Responses now feature links to source material, such as news articles and blogs, which can be explored further by clicking the “Sources” button below each answer. This integration connects users with original web content and presents it within their conversation. By blending search functionality with conversational AI, ChatGPT makes discovering reliable information straightforward while providing publishers with new visibility.

Powered by a finely-tuned version of GPT-4, enhanced with synthetic data and outputs from OpenAI’s o1-preview, ChatGPT's search model draws on third-party search providers and partner content to supply comprehensive, accurate information. Insights from the SearchGPT prototype informed this experience, and ChatGPT continues to evolve with plans to improve areas like shopping and travel. 

OpenAI aims to extend the new search capabilities to Advanced Voice, Canvas, Free users, and guests in future updates, delivering an enriched search experience across all platforms.
